I've been using this powerful app for years to build weighted playlists of my music, where higher rated songs play more often than lower rated ones. (This cannot be done via iTunes on an iiPhone as Apple Music does not support live updating of any but the simplest smart playlists. Like any powerful tool, there's a learning curve but it's well worth the invested time. The developer is active and responsive. Great app. Highly recommended.

Returning to the Apple ecosystem and had to buy this app again because I couldn’t remember my old Apple ID. Well worth the money, this is a must have app for me, I love being able to create smart playlists on the go. The UI isn’t great but it works perfectly when you learn how to use it.

This was my go to app for managing my music playlist. However the developer stopped updating and now after last 2 Apple iOS 14 updates now cause the app to just crash every time I try to load a list. Hopefully the developer will revisit and make fixes as this app allowed you to manage your loaded music in various custom lists with many options for filtering and sorting.

Being able to create smart playlists on my phone is incredible, especially since you can’t create smart playlists on Macs anymore because of the lack of iTunes. I’ve tried a couple of different smart playlist apps but this is the only one that has the flexibility and scope of options that lets me create exactly the playlists I want. The UI is a little weird but it’s not difficult once you get the hang of it. If you want to create iTunes style smart playlists on your phone, I HIGHLY recommend this app!

I have been using the App Store since it debuted, and this is the first time I have ever written a review. That is because this app is so good and so unsung that I want to do what I can to help the developer have more success. There is no other playlist tool available for the iPhone that is this powerful, this full featured, and this customizable. On top of that, the price is more than fair and there is no subscription, which is increasingly rare. The one thing I found lacking in Smartplaylist was the ability to save a smartplaylist as a playlist in the Music app. And now the developer has added that feature. He could not be making much money from this, yet he keeps improving it anyway. If there were a way to offer cash tips through the App Store, I would do so in a heartbeat.

This app does at least one thing others don’t: finds tunes that belong to two or more playlists (using the List Operation = field). Thank you, developer!

I really like this app and have been using it for years. It is an excellent alternative to the smart playlist capabilities of iTunes, since this actually works. Recently I had a very minor issue with the app. The developer identified and fixed the issue quickly. Great support!

Please add count down timer to stop playing after xxx minutes

showing rating of each track in playlist and possibility to rate not playing now track is great also customizable playlist fields like add or remove comment field is awesome. Wish it had fav heart filter and showing also giving it too and possibility to edit some fields will be super.

Functional but the design and user experience could be drastically better. Just might make my own app like this.

November 2018: I am wondering where did my older review has gone. Anyway, there is nothing more powerful than this app to find music from your library, and ability to sort by multiple parameters. Of course, this has a bit of learning curve, but if you are passionate about rating and finding music other than just by artist/album etc. in completely customized way that suits your mood and desire, this is perhaps the only app. I am surprised that almost all music playing app still rely on static playlist, while this app produces dynamic playlist on the fly unlike any other. Enjoy! But learn first how to use it.

Since installing the latest version, my Recently Played playlist in iTunes doesn’t update. Otherwise, functionality remains solid, if not precisely intuitive. Worth the price.

The best way to shuffle your playlists and actually get to hear all your songs, not just the ones Apple keeps repeating while ignoring the later songs on your playlists.

Thanks for the app! It replicates the functioning of smart play lists on desktop 's iTunes. The way I use it most: - I use play counts to keep track of what I've listened from the music on iPhone. So if I transfer 100 tracks to iPhone with a play count of 0, I create a smart play list that only includes tracks with 0 play count. Which means that each time I listen to a song, it will exit the list. With the normal random you end up listening several times to the same song and never know which are the tracks that never come up. - on certain playlists I limit to 3 songs from same album. It gives more variety and at the time you have a better feel of the album than with the normal random that switches album after playing only one track. - finally you can rate the song, which means that when listening to new music I can separate within the app what I am going to keep from what I will delete. Conclusion: SmartPlayList helps me listen to a growing collection of more than 35000 songs, all of which I listen over a period of 4 years.

I have been using this through several releases. This is a great app if you like to create smart playlists based upon things such as star rating or last played date (as I do). You can also tell a smart playlist to also include or exclude the contents of another smart playlist. This is very hand for creating complex queries to generate mixes based upon many conditions. With iTunes deprecating the star rating, this is a must have for me.

UPDATE 05/2017 I still use this app almost daily. Recently got a new car that supports Apple CarPlay and this app once again shines. Apple still cannot seem to get its shuffle function in the Music app to act like a true shuffle that doesn't repeat songs ever other day. That's where Smart Playlist and it's brilliant query capability comes in! Get in the car, hit my filter that removes all songs that have been played in the past couple days and voila! Perfect fix. UPDATE 06/2016 Extra playlist slots added? App keeps getting better and better. All of my prior review comments still stand and I'm still using it almost daily. I don't ever want to be without this app! Original review: This is something I've been looking for for YEARS. I wish I had found it sooner. For anyone who has a large music library and uses the shuffle feature has probably noticed that your I-device seems to avoid large chunks of your collection. With this app you can easily tell the music app to play songs that haven't been played for a month.. 2 months.. for example. Include or exclude artists, genres.. limit by number of plays.. number of skips.. it's almost endless. Warning, though, this app is very advanced feature-wise so if you're not familiar with querying be sure to look at the documentation for help.

I really love how much granular control Smart Playlist give you over creation of playlists. I've got a pretty extensive library and the ability to define playlists on the fly using pretty much any bit of metadata stored about any song in my iTunes library as a criterion has been great for parties. Having said that, the user interface is a little overwhelming and cryptic and could use a little polish (although I am not sure what I would recommend). But in general, if you like to create playlists on any criteria without having to go into iTunes, Smart Playlist is a great app to consider!

This is a fantastic app. The playlist features are very nice, but this app sets itself apart from other similar utilities in the way that it extracts and displays metadata for songs in my library (play count, skip count, etc). By listing individual play counts for every song (and allowing me to sort on it), it allows me to easily see which songs I am playing the most, which songs within a given album get played the most, etc. There are a LOT of features within the app that allow you to customize how the songs get displayed and sorted. The developer has given the user a great deal of control here. The amount of customizability can seem a little overwhelming at first, but the default settings allow it to work right out of the box. And then playing with the settings and rules, you can do so much. One thing that is particularly cool is the ability to do multi-level sorts. For example, you can sort the songs by artist, and then within each artist sort by album, and within each album sort by play count! So great! Well done.

It's ridiculous that Apple Music on iOS is so neutered. And that smart playlists in iTunes are so limited. This app completely solves these problems. Essential.

This is the best playlist generator out there for iPhone. If you have a large library of music this is a must have.

I'm amazed by how powerful it is and how efficiently it operates. I love it but I think it skipped leg day. Every part of the interface feels like an afterthought. If someone in interface development wants to see where they can take it, please let them.

What a great app, I can now create smart playlists directly on my phone rather than having to use iTunes on my laptop. You can do pretty much any playlist you can imagine on this app.

The application takes a little while to get used to the controls and you need to read the help documentation to really get the benefits of the app. But well worth the 15 minutes or so. The latest update to iTunes has completely decimated the Smart Playlist functionality (limited sorting options and Live Updating is clunky as hell). For me, this application saved my favorite feature of iTunes. What's even better is that you can use it straight from your devices and don't need to build a smart playlist on your computer. Only drawback is you cannot save playlists to the music player. That just proves that Apple needs to buy out this application and include this functionality with a future iOS update.

If you use the menu button in the lower left and the select help from the drop down list you will see the instructions for creating and playing the playlist you generate. It's awesome once you get the handle of it.

Well looks like an app for engineer with clunky user interface and i cant figure out how to play the playlist or save it. Completely worthless.

For years I've been miserable over the fact that I couldn't create smart playlists on my iPhone. If only I knew this app existed sooner!!! I'm shocked at what this app is capable of

This app is so powerful. It lets you create smart “automatic" play lists on the fly based on a ton of different criteria. It even has the ability to playback audio files at different speeds. This comes in handy for college lectures. Great APP! Thanks!

I love this app. It is soooo good!!!! I cannot say enough good things. The developer is awesome, regularly issues great updates and responds to feedback. A must-buy for any music enthusiast. 5+ stars!!

Much better. - New iDevice and I'm taking this somewhat unique app for a spin daily this past week.

I know my way around a pc,Mac and iOS for all devices and still this was really way too much to take in. Don't waste space on your idevices with this app

If you ever plan on playing story driven tabletop games, this is a great app (actually one I've wanted for years). If you're willing to take the time to set grouping tags in iTunes, you can use this app to create perfect playlists on the spot for any scenario.

No other music app lets you generate playlists with so much control, and then, switch gears to follow other avenues, like same album, genre, or composer. Thanks especially for the inclusion of composer, both in the list gen, and in the information pane! Digital audio files can contain an amazing amount of info, and most audio apps do not allow access to it (I'm looking at you Apple). Yes you can search by composer in some, but you can't see the name in play mode, and long titles are often cutoff. For that reason alone, this is really the only player for classical music listeners. Smartplaylist packs an enormous amount of control into the interface, but lacks an attractive look; "Groove 2" easily wins on style. If the developer could take a cue from apps like that, this would be the one to beat. I'd also like to be able to hide the left pane rules section, and be able to keep the player pane visible. In other words, separate the list gen from the play mode more. Thanks for finally making a player that lets me explore my music the way I want!

It's well worth the time to learn the interface. It provides insight and focused access into large music collections. For example, you can list all highly-rated song,s in a genre, in order of least recently played (e.g. what good jazz tunes have I not played for a while). Lots of possibilities. Very nice.

Honestly, I can't believe how lame the iPad music app is. After all of these years of great iTunes and iPod software, Apple really dropped the ball on the iPad's music app. Just how unsophisticated do they think iPad users are anyway? Ranting aside, I spent a considerable amount of time (and even a little money), searching for and trying out music apps. None of them were much better, until I found this one. I don't think I could create a more powerful playlist creation tool (than this one) if I wrote the program myself. This is a first-class, and extremely useful, app that I will recommend to everyone and continue to use for many years to come. Thank you (to the developer) for creating such a great music player!

I absolutely DETEST how Apple ripped so much functionality out of the Music app for the iPad in IOS 5. I did a lot of searching for a suitable replacement and ended up buying this app. SmartPlaylist lets me generate lists by Star ratings again!! I can't figure out how to use this app to actually Rate a song though, which is why I give this app a 4 star rating instead of 5.

Yes, it creates a good playlist similar to iTunes smartplaylist, but it lacks the option to save the playlist, which kind of defeats the purpose for me. I like the option of deleting songs from a playlist and the lack of this feature, as well as the confusing interface makes it almost useless for my intent.

I really like this app. I use it all the time. It would be nice if you can sort songs by "Grouping" since I have many songs in iTunes grouped under this colum. Other than that is great.

I hate this app its ridiculous. Never spend your money on it! It makes no sense. I put in the composer and nothing comes up! I have over 800 songs and this stupid app doesnt recognize any!

iPhone wouldn't be the same without it. I wish I had option to save my playlists to iPod app. Loaded with options. Must buy in my book. Please add option to shuffle.

Creates some great playlists that I never would have created because it's a real pain to do it in iTunes then sync everytime!!! On-the-fly is good. I only wish I could save the currently playing tracks as an actual playlist with a unique name. And also have a way to save playlists and access them in the iPod app.

This app does just it says it will... it's almost just like making smart playlists in iTunes, except on-the-fly, so you can hear what you want to hear WHEN you want to hear it! Pros: Functions VERY well, and usually generates the playlists pretty fast. If I use a broad search it can take a minute or 2, but I also have over 7,000 songs so it understandable. Startup time is instant! Love all the details you get about your songs... I've been looking for a way to view things like play count and last played on my ipod and this is the first I've seen that does that! Being able to sort yout playlist is also key! Very nice icon... had no problem putting it next to my music app on the front page! Cons: The app can feel a bit clunky as scrolling the screen isn't very smooth. Also, the visual appearance of the app itself isn't the best. I'd prefer a more slick interface with dark/grey background like apple's music app. Also, while the detailed info page is packed with info... it's kinda ugly. These are small things, though... the core functionality of the app is solid! Suggestions: I'd really like to see 'Year' and 'Date Added' fields added to the app. 'Year' so I can make playlists involving songs that were released during a particular year and 'Date Added' so I can, for example, play all my 5 star songs that I bought in 2009. Keep up the good work... I hope to see many updates to this fantastic app!

For any of you who ever owned a Rio Karma, think of this as RioDJ on steroids. I've bought virtually every playlist manager available, but this is easily the most dynamic and fun to use. Allows you to run live queries against your music library without having to refresh on iTunes. Now that they've added the ability to save multiple queries, I give it a 5. I highly recommend if you're looking for an app that will give you fresh mixes and a fun interface on the fly.

What sets this app apart from all of the recent lookalike apps is that it is easy to use but also highly flexible. It also has minimal load and launch times. Anyone who wants to be able to generate thier own smart playlists on the go needs this and no other app.

I used to create smartplaylists in iTunes and transfer them to my iPod. Particularly, I like having playlist of songs rated 3 stars and up by artist. That was many smartplaylist to sync on my iPod. With this app, I can create these and other types of playlists on the fly on my iPod. This is great! Also allows to create playlist based on keywords in song titles. I had been looking for an app for that. It also allows to shuffle the playlist created by this apps - although it took me a while to figure out how to do this... I would give it 5 stars if the save settings would allow to save multiple, and if the performance using conditional operators was better. But definitely an app worth the $$$ if you are looking for a smart playlist like feature accessible on your iPod.
